Drunkenness is the excessive consumption of alcohol. It negatively affects the work, life, health and well-being an individual and of the society as a whole. It is detrimental to all aspects of social and individual life, causing injury of physical and emotional proportions. It is often one of the causes of anti-social behavior.

Now there is a group of people who drink only when they want to. For them alcohol consumption is just one form of relaxation. While there is this other group of people who see the heavy consumption of alcohol as a part of their lives that they cannot control. They keep drinking and don’t know when to stop, till they get to a state of stupor. At this point, they constitute a nuisance to themselves and others.

Research has shown that there are three levels of alcohol consumption. They include:

Alcohol consumption for this group of drinkers falls between 1 drink a day for women and up to 2 drinks for men.

Primarily occurs after 4 drinks for a woman and up to 5 drinks for a man on the same occasion on at least one day within thirty days.

This group of alcohol consumers are believed to have the capacity to take at least 5 drinks on the same occasion.

Binge drinking

Also, known as heavy episodic drinking, binge drinking is a modern term for drinking alcoholic beverages with the intent of getting intoxicated by heavy consumption of alcohol within a short period of time. It is popular in several countries in the world and usually done in groups. It is another form of alcohol abuse.

Binge drinking is associated with a profound social harm, financial prices as well as increased disease burden. It is greater and not unusual in males at some stage in early life and young adulthood.

Effects of binging

  • Binging is associated with negative effects on neurologic, cardiac, gastrointestinal, hematologic, immune, musculoskeletal organ structures as well as growing the threat of alcohol brought on psychiatric issues.

  • They should be involved in Counselling sessions lasting 30-60 minutes. These sessions should be conducted by some trained personnel.
  • There should be a set of goals and rules drawn by the patient to monitor results.
  • Public awareness concerning the risks of binge consuming should be intensified
  • Recreational and adventurous activities such as sports and mountain climbing should be encouraged.

Hangover

Hangover is the effect of heavy drinking from the night before. It manifests in the form of headaches, dizziness, stomach disorders, nausea, vomiting, shaking hands, rise or drop in blood pressure. and the decline of sentiments expressed. This is accompanied by a feeling of sadness, apprehension and anxiety. The patient often thinks that everyone is looking at him with contempt and condemned for drunkenness. A hangover is also characterized by self judgement.

In alcoholics with hangover, there are cases of insomnia or other sleep disorders. They fall asleep with difficulty, but the sleep is on the surface and does not bring any relief. Nighttime does not refresh and invigorate, but on the contrary, leave a feeling of weakness and depression. Sweating and trembling of the hands is so strong and clearly expressed that not only does it interfere with work, but all daily activities are affected.
